TJ Quietly Having A Good Year

He is at 723 yards rushing which would project to about 1,200 for the season if he can stay healthy.

Hard to believe with the line he is running behind.

Had well over a 100 yesterday against Pittsburgh!

Looking at breaking 6,000 for his career next game.

I just hate that he ended up with a cellar-dweller. I have always wanted to see him in Dallas as a Cowboy, not as an opponent!

TJ has 96 more yards than Benson with only 2 more carries.

TJ also has 6 more receiving yards and no lost fumbles, while Benson has 2 lost fumbles.

TJ averaging exactly 1/2 yard more per carry than Benson.

Not to mention the fact that you couldn't make Benson block if you held a gun to his head.....

They would have had to have given him a new contract, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million while taking a cap hit of around 7-10 million dollars for releasing Benson. I always strike a nerve with this subject, but when you see a guy like Ryan Grant averaging 4.2 yards and Benson/TJ averaging 3.2 and 3.8, you save your money and invest in offensive line help. Not that Im a Benson fan or even a TJ fan for that matter, but that offensive line is badly aging. Everyone knew how old Fred Miller and Ruben Brown were coming into the season. Chicago thought they could get one more year out of them and it didnt work. Miller surrendered 3 sacks and 3 false start calls yesterday and Brown is out for the remainder of the season and will probably retire. Even Kreutz is no spring chicken.

Thomas made 20 million by asking for a trade, he gets most of the carries and is on a team thats just as good as the Bears this season. Not a bad thing at all for him.

As for Grossman, who was Chicago supposed to replace him with in the offseason? Not much available and please dont say draft Brady Quinn. Everyone offers a "get rid of" idea but never offers a replacement. Why is that lol.

Simply put, if you draft a guy #4 overall, you pretty much have to play him. Not in the old nfl where there was no cap, but today, you pretty much do. Even if they didnt want to play Benson, the really only other financial viability is to draft a running back in the middle rounds. Running backs are a dime a dozen fellas. Ship Benson or TJ to Denver and they probably get 1500 yards. TJ is a better player but not be alot and he would be getting the same kind of yardage that he is getting right now with the Jets in all likelyhood.

You also gotta consider his age too. AP is hurt in his first year. The longevity of a running back isnt long. Its a position you usually want to stay young at. Lastly, you see NE and Indy winning with Maroni and Addai. You see great running backs struggling this year like Frank Gore and Steven Jackson. Theres very few running backs in the league, maybe Peterson and Tomlinson that can get a lot of yards with weak lines. TJ and Benson are no different in that respect.

The money does make sense

But

There is a difference in a 4-6 team (Bears) and a 2-8 team (Jets).

There's a big difference between 3.8 (Jones on a 2-8 team) and 3.3 (Benson on a 4-6 team)

In fact enough difference to assume at least a 4.0 or better if the 3.8 is transfered to the 4-6 team, which then might well translate to a 5-5 or 6-4 record rather than 4-6.

My biggest problem with Benson is how he performs in big games, in college it was like he dominated until OU rolled around and then in the pros he's non-existent in a huge game. Benson is just not somebody I would want on my team, he showed me all I needed to see in last years Super Bowl.
